Cycling and Community Engagement
For over two decades, South Street’s Bike Shop has been a cornerstone of youth engagement, despite rarely hitting the trails with the kids. The busy schedules of The Front Porch Cafe and numerous other programs meant that organized bike rides were a rarity. However, the narrative is shifting, thanks to dedicated leadership and strategic partnerships. With the Cafe now thriving under the management of Porchlight Coffee Co., and with Chris Usner at the helm of the Bike Shop, we’ve seen the successful pilot of youth rides. These aren’t just any rides; they include mountain biking, long-distance excursions, and regular outings in collaboration with Summit Metro Parks, using the Summit Lake Nature Center as a hub for these adventures.
We are excited to be expanding our mission beyond the Bike Shop’s walls with South Street Cycles. Not only will we continue refurbishing and earning bikes with local youth, but we’re also stepping into a new realm of community and youth engagement through coordinated rides.
This initiative is further enriched by a special partnership with Summit Metro Parks, allowing us to facilitate rides and cycling events across Summit County. A select group of Bike Shop adolescents will have the unique opportunity to serve as support staff, fostering their development and involvement.
We’re calling on our community to join us on this journey. With more rides, events, and outdoor opportunities than ever before, we’re excited to pedal forward into this new chapter of South Street Ministries.
